Tariq looked mortified. He really believed the yeshiva student he had killed knew where the secret cache of weapons was hidden. Good, thought Lia. It would make him think twice before killing the shelter guard Goldstein or anyone else.

“I’ll help you find the secret storeroom, Commander Tariq,” Lia said. “I believe it is upstairs and not in the basement where your men have been looking.”

Tariq thought for a moment.

“So you say,” he said with bluster, trying to cover up his own incompetence with aggression. “We are busy. You find it, Christian. Succeed, and I may forget your immodest words and behavior.”

Lia did not like leaving the wounded Goldstein. Her parents took over watching the supposedly unconscious IDF soldier. Steph was allowed to go to the kitchens for water and escort Jewish women hostages to the toilets.

After the messy murder of the Orthodox teenager, Lia had freedom to roam around Canada House. The main doors were propped open. It was tempting to think about escape. However, there was no way to get her parents, friends, and a few hundred people out without being shot to pieces. She had to get help, somehow.

All the windows had steel shutters. There was plenty of food. There was no chance they would send her out to get supplies. Whatever she was going to do, she would have to do on the second floor where there were fewer guards. She had to do something before Tariq realized there was no secret weapons cache.

She got up to the second floor, looked around, and opened a door.

“Ugh!”

She shut it immediately, her head spinning. It was the garbage chute. They had tried to stuff the yeshiva student’s body down it head first. His polished black shoes hung over the filthy floor.

The boy, and possibly his family, had thought they were safe when they got inside the shelter. How long before Tariq got more angry and confused than he already was and decided to just set the place on fire with all of them inside? Lia decided on a long-shot plan. Canada House was an important civil emergency strongpoint. Someone might be watching.

She quietly got her military ID back from her father. He did not want to give it up, probably wanting to destroy it. Tariq must not find out she was with the IDF, but the small green-and-blue wallet with the embossed Israeli flag was a key element in her scheme.

Next, she needed a length of twine. On one of her runs, she tried to get some from the kitchen. The damn preteen terror kid was watching her too closely. She could not steal any.

Bracing herself, she went upstairs, back into the garbage room. She had seen what she needed. The yeshiva kid’s gartel, a long black belt made of cloth. The dead body was stuck well and good in the chute. She had to pull a few times to get the belt. She hid it under her coat.

On the side of the hallway facing Daniel Street, she quietly unlatched one of the metal shutters.
